How to use this calculator

- Choose a known price, margin or markup.
- Compare price, profit and percentages.
What this calculator does
This calculator connects cost, selling price and profit. Margin uses selling price as its base; markup uses cost. You can enter a known price or find a price for a target percentage.
Worked example
Cost 80, selling price 100
- Profit is 100 − 80 = 20.
- Margin = 20 / 100 × 100 = 20%. Markup = 20 / 80 × 100 = 25%.
Profit 20, margin 20% and markup 25%.
Frequently asked questions
Are margin and markup the same?
No: cost 80, price 100, profit 20. Margin is 20/100 = 20%; markup is 20/80 = 25%.
Can I calculate a loss?
Yes. In known-price mode, enter a price below cost.
Does this include VAT?
No. Use amounts on the same tax basis and the VAT calculator to add tax.
Tips for setting a selling price
- Compare cost and price on the same tax basis; VAT is not added automatically.
- Define which costs are included before interpreting profit. A 20% margin is not a 20% markup.
